Exeter is the capital of Devon, a lively city packed with character and home to great cultural diversity. Much of its centre was bombed out during World War II but it bounced back with a vengeance, and today attracts visitors from far and wide. Situated on a plateau overlooking the River Exe, Exeter is picturesquely encircled by Roman and medieval walls and is very compact, its street plan not having changed much since the Romans laid out its High Street. Park your car in the convenient NCP car park in Exeter and explore this delightful city on foot.
Points of Interest
The distinctive cathedral and its intimate close look like something out of an Anthony Trollope novel, and indeed they provided the setting for one of his books. In the summer crowds listen to the buskers here and admire the many fine historic buildings in a range of architectural styles. Leave the car at a convenient NCP Exeter car park close by and visit attractions such as Elizabethan Mol’s Coffee House, which along with the magnificent medieval Guildhall miraculously survived the war. The Custom House on the quayside and the nearby Norman castle are also worth a visit, and there are plenty of good independent shops and restaurants to enjoy too.
